Please allow me to introduce myself, and tell you a little about my family and ministry. My name is J. Tom Washburn and I have been married to Julie, for 25 years December 27th, 2008. We have two boys, Trey (21) and Preston (19). Trey attends Lubbock Christian University and Preston attends Harding University. Julie and I have been partners in ministry since our marriage. I first began ministry at the Broadway Church of Christ, Lubbock Texas, in 1979 as an intern and I have been in full time ministry ever since. Through the years God has blessed us with great opportunities to minister to some wonderful people. As a youth minister, I worked with the Fort Worth & Jax/Fairmont Park Church in Midland Texas, 3rd & Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales New Mexico and the South Plains Church in Lubbock Texas. In 1993 I started working with the Sunset Church of Christ in Lubbock as their associate minister, and in 2000 Julie and I moved to Enid Oklahoma where I assumed the role of pulpit minister for the North Garland Church of Christ. Julie and I began our work in Brownwood, at the Austin Avenue Church of Christ, on July 1st 2009.
Over the years Julie and I have been involved in every area of the local work. We have had study groups in our home, and we have put together large seminars. We have hosted a few hungry people, and Julie has cooked for hundreds. We have set with families that were going through loss, and we have rejoiced with families in victory. God has blessed us by teaching us many lessons in our lives and we believe we have been called to share those lessons. Julie and I believe our ministry should reach beyond just the local congregation. For the last 14 years I have been on the executive board of L.T.C. (now N.T.L.T.C.) as well as the convention coordinator for the Dallas Hyatt Reunion convention. Julie has served as an event coordinator for puppets and presently serves as the event coordinator for drama. For 21 of the last 22 years I have taught at Red River Family Encampment and I have accepted a position on their board of directors. For the last 12 years I have been a large church and faculty instructor for Walk Thru the Bible. Julie and I have also traveled to the Philippines to teach and encourage the church there. Julie and I have always believed ministry should be about people. One of the passages that guide our ministry is Matt. 11:2-6. I believe, in this passage, Jesus gives three characteristics of effective ministry. 1. People are helped. 2. The Good News is preached. 3. Everyone is included.
